Symposium History

The International Symposium on Carbon Materials (ISCM) was established in 2023 as an international platform for researchers, students, and industry partners working across the diverse field of carbon materials. ISCM is the premier flagship international conference under the Carbon Society of Taiwan (CST), and has grown into a biennial forum for exchanging new ideas, research findings, and technologies related to carbon science and applications.

The first ISCM (ISCM-1) was held in Tainan, Taiwan, from January 31 to February 3, 2023, under the theme “Carbon, for a better world.” Hosted in Taiwan’s historic cultural capital, the inaugural meeting brought together forward-looking discussions on carbon materials for energy, environment, sustainability, and bio-applications. ISCM-1 attracted nearly 200 participants from over 15 countries and featured 160 paper presentations, establishing a strong foundation for the international growth of the symposium.

ISCM-2 was held at Ming Chi University of Technology, New Taipei City, Taiwan, from January 13 to 16, 2025. Continuing the theme “Carbon, for a better world,” ISCM-2 took place in northern Taiwan, where academic research, industrial development, and urban innovation converge. The symposium attracted more than 290 participants from 12 countries and featured 251 paper presentations, further expanding its international reach. ISCM-2 highlighted carbon materials for energy, environment, sustainability, and bio-applications, with a special focus on CO₂ reduction, utilization, and neutralization.

ISCM-3, to be held at National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, from January 18 to 22, 2027, will continue this tradition in Taiwan’s vibrant southern harbor city. Set between the mountains and the sea, Kaohsiung offers a dynamic setting where science, industry, culture, and coastal life meet. ISCM-3 will further strengthen international exchange, academic collaboration, and the role of carbon materials in addressing global challenges.
